Reference Meeting Minutes -- 1/28/14

Holly    We have a $20 gift card for Barnes & Noble.  If you’d like to use it for something in your collection, let Holly know.  Overdrive’s book selection for The Big Library Read is a cookbook -- Aida Mollencamp’s Keys to the Kitchen.  It will be “always available” from Feb. 7 - Mar. 5.  Alice will add print copies to our collection.  The speaker for tonight’s Downton Abbey program has cancelled but the program, in a slightly different form, will still be held.  We will have drop-in Zinio help this Saturday.

Carol S.    The Board packet from last week’s annual meeting is available for viewing at the Reference Desk.  Carol thanked everyone who volunteered to help out with the upcoming Star Wars program.  National Library Week is Apr. 13-19.  Closing dates for 2014 are posted outside the Staff lounge.  Sandy created a list of local restaurants that we can give out to groups meeting here.  Old magazines for sale will still be available in the vestibule area.  A new flat screen is being ordered for the Friends Room.

Carol C.    We have information on private tutors available in the Homework Help file at the Youth Desk.  We will have a Brain Friendly activities program this weekend.

Tim    Chess Club meets today from 3-5.  Tax forms are trickling in.  We have the 1040s but no instruction booklets.  We have received nothing from the State of Michigan.

Lauren    We will be adding new Bookpacks from Playaway to our collection.  These will be in large binders and will include a book/books along with a Playaway so kids can read and listen at the same time.  They will be housed between the audiobooks and the media kits.

Susan S.    The Friends Board Meeting was held last week.  They announced that there will be an audiobook sale on Feb. 1 and a children’s book sale on Feb. 11.  The Book & Author Luncheon featuring Mardi Jo Link will be held on May 8.  The Friends Annual Meeting will be on May 14.  The newsletter proof should be here soon.  Materials and instructions for closing off the main entry doors due to frigid conditions are housed behind the Circ Desk.  Carol S. said that we are not to lock the door as it violates the Fire Code.  The portable smart screen in the Friends room is now working.

Frank    The new coin box for the Teen Zone printer is on backorder.  Frank asked for feedback regarding the new catalog computer.  Feedback was mixed and we will continue to test it out this week.

Barb    Central Middle School will not be making their visit this week due to the weather. College Bound Books meets today.  Please talk up the College Entrance Preparation program.  Many students in need of last-minute volunteer hours have been working on weeding books in the Teen Zone.  TUX met on Saturday and decided they wanted to do Blind Date with a Book again this year.  The Zine display is up.  Please give new submissions to Barb.  She asked for feedback from the Exam Cram.  Staff feedback was all positive but the students would like to see separate quiet and group study areas next time.  The Character Cupcakes program is on Feb. 12 and the STEM program is on Feb. 13.

Alice    The master list of 250 popular authors for the Author Readalike project that she and Heather are working on for the Large Print and Cdbook collections is complete.  Heather is working on making labels that will be attached to the materials.

In attendance: Baker, Bussard, Champagne, Dinan, Elkin, Ferguson, Hibner, McCardell, Page, Patterson, Sadler, Sherman, Souchock, Stoney.
