Holly We will be closed Sat., Sept. 6 for the Fall Festival and all staff will be working Fri., Sept 5 instead. Rather than do our annual building-wide shelf reading, this year we will do a more limited shelf reading of the worst areas on that day. If you know of an area that is in particularly bad shape, let Holly know. Holly put together a list of local emergency resources. It is at the Reference Desk in a file folder labeled “Homeless Shelters”. Alice suggested we add a link in the Reference Wiki to Julie’s List (julieslist.homestead.com), a comprehensive, clickable list of community resources in the tri-county area. She also added that advising a person in need to call 211 is probably the best single thing we can do. It is staffed by very knowledgeable social workers at the United Way of Southeastern Michigan. Holly passed out a list (also available on the Staff Blog) of procedures to follow when you need help with a program. Carol advised that as staff we are welcome to attend any of our programs on our own time but we are not legally allowed to volunteer to assist for free.
Carol S. We have a new policy regarding the Teen Zone. Adults who are not accompanying their teens should be asked to use computers on the upper level. Adults may use the Teen Zone study room only as a last resort, if all the other rooms are taken. You may check with Susan S. to see if she can accommodate them in another room. We are trying to keep the Teen Zone exclusively for use by teens. Carol congratulated everyone on the successful SRPs. The proposed location of the new Digital Media Lab is indicated by the tape on the floor near the music cds. The Lab will focus on video, music, and graphic arts and its’ primary audience will be the teens, though adults are welcome to use it, too. Please think about potential locations for materials that will be displaced.
Susan S. It was difficult to fit all of our upcoming events into the next newsletter and Susan appreciates everyone’s help in making it work. Plymouth Scholars will be participating in a scavenger hunt here on Aug. 18.
Dana 1449 children signed up for Youth SRP this year, up 71 from last year. Prize winners have been notified. Open houses are coming up. Signup for Sept. storytimes begins soon.
Katie The online catalog is down. She will email us when it is back up.
Sue P. Adult SRP has given out 265 prizes so far. Although the program officially ended last night, she will accept bingo sheets for a few more days. There will be a random prize drawing tonight.
Kathy She asked if we could replace the sign that says “Bestsellers” with one that reflects the location given in the catalog, “New Fiction”. It seemed a very popular idea. We will start offering an Excel 3 class in September. Also offered in September will be MS Word and Labels.
