Reference Meeting – April 9, 2012
Holly - When issuing an internet-only library card, please place all address info on 1st address line, including apartment number. Do not put info on the 2nd address line.
Vendor demos for a new ILS will be here soon, although an exact date is not yet known. See Holly if you wish to attend.
Frank - Wireless printing is now live. Frank suggested that all look at the instructional video to best help patrons wishing to print from their wireless devices. There are also laminated instruction sheets at each help desk. A question came up about the wireless printing app. Does it need to be downloaded each time? Yes, because it disappears when the device is turned off.
Pat - Pat provided an explanation about the proposed elimination of the Michigan personal property tax – a tax on equipment and inventory of local businesses. Should this tax be eliminated and not replaced by funding from another source, local governments would face serious shortfalls. Personal property tax accounts for 10% of the PDL budget.
Pat also shared information on the new hearing assistance equipment we are purchasing for use in the meeting rooms. This system should provide hearing assistance for individuals who are in discussion meetings. There is a money back guarantee with the equipment; we will need to schedule some meetings during the equipment trial period.
Lauren - The Youth Garden Party is scheduled for this Thursday.
Susan - Susan reminded all that the Volunteer luncheon will be held on Thursday, April 19.
The annual Book and Author Luncheon co-sponsored by the Friends of the Plymouth, Canton, Novi and Northville libraries will be held on Tuesday, May 28. Patrons interested in attending should be directed to our website. There will no longer be actual tickets for the event; reservations are to be made by mail or by dropping off the order form (linked from the announcement on our site) and a check to the Friends mailbox.
Tim - Tim inquired if we still needed to take I.D. for the DSM-IV up at reference? Yes – same for Bresser’s , NADA, the external hard drive and the ethernet cable. Holly will make laminated cards for every item requiring ID.
Cathy - Cathy reminded all that high school-age volunteers should be directed to Emily; middle school volunteers should be directed to Susan.
There are 100 names on the waitlist for The Hunger Games – Susan will ask the Friends to look for copies In their donated books.
Evan - Wednesday’s movie is War Horse; Wii bowling will take place on Thursday.
Katie - If you are accessing a patron’s record and a pop-up box comes up regarding their address, just close it, don’t save it. It is ok to override the ok to look at the record, but do not renew it. This must be done at circ. Pat Carter explained that a patron does need to come into the library every 3 years to renew their card.
Katie explained our new system for newspaper check-in. She also kindly sent an email out detailing the process: “We now have the newspaper check-in spreadsheet on the S drive, under S:\Newspapers. There is a shortcut to this folder on the desktops of both Reader's Advisory computers. This will be the most up-to-date information on which newspapers have been received and processed. The pages will be updating this spreadsheet throughout the day. Be sure not to keep the spreadsheet open all the time, as you will need to close and re-open it to see recent changes. In the near future, we will eliminate newspaper issue records in Horizon. We will maintain a bib record in Horizon, with notes on the retention. However, we will no longer be able to see individual issues in Horizon or on the OPAC.”
In attendance: Baker, Carter, Ferguson, Hibner, Lichtman, Patterson, Page, Petlewski, Sherman, Smale, Stoney, Thomas.
