Reference Meeting Minutes 9/10/13

Holly - Discussed the viability of the Staff Choices blog. The group decided to disband the blog. Links will be removed.  Reminded the group that when the Affordable Care Act goes into effect, 30 hours is considered full-time by the ACA definition. Part-time staff will need to keep their hours under 30, including Sundays.  Holly also reminded the group that there are many Librarians in Charge among us. If you become aware of a problem, please try to deal with it yourself it you are an LIC - especially if Holly and Carol are on-desk. If we are available, we are happy to step in. Otherwise, please try to deal with minor situations rather than pass them up the chain.

Pat - Thanked the group for all their good work over the years!

Lauren - Will be cutting READ to twice a month (the first two Mondays).

Barb - National Honor Society seniors are doing individual service projects, similar to the Girl Scout Gold Award and the Eagle Scout Award for Boy Scouts. There is a fair for organizations who want to pitch a project on Monday 9/23. Let Barb know if you have ideas for projects we can host. The computer tutors will be NHS juniors. There are lots of computer tutors available, including some that are not NHS students. Barb is planning some shifting of materials in the Teen Zone. Details to come.

Marjorie - All Medicare Part D sign-up sheets are in the front of the program sign-up binder, not by individual dates.

Sue - The Great Michigan Read starts in October. Promotional materials are coming, as well as more copies of Annie's Ghosts.

Susan - Pat's retirement luncheon is on Friday 9/20. There is also a receiption for invited people from 3-6 that same day.  Jim McKeon is speaking here on 9/18 at 7:00pm about the Daisy Air Rifle Building. Please promote this program!

Tim - Banned Books Week is 9/22 - 9/28. Buttons and book lists will be made available.  Reminded the group that reports in Workflows that include "last date circulated" will include items checked out to locations like TU, mending, and display since that is a check-out function and Workflows does not distinguish between those check-outs and "real" patron check-outs.

Kathy - Overdrive is doing the Big Library Read again. The title is Nancy Clancy. This is a children's chapter book.  It starts 9/16 and runs for two weeks. This title will be "always available" during that time for simultaneous use.  The Gale Powerspeak database has been cancelled, and Rosetta Stone will be added. We are also keeping our subscription to Mango Languages.  The new Overdrive Media Console app has been released for mobile devices. Kathy is doing two genealogy talks in November. She also pointed out that the font on the home page has been made larger.
